A historical message was locked in a glass bottle

ajab gajab : The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) said the painter noticed something unusual while working on a badly rusted part of the wall and upon closer inspection it was discovered that it was a glass bottle containing a letter.

ajab gajab : The bottle was brought to Hobart, where conservators from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) carefully opened it and cut off the cork coated in bitumen before removing the fragile contents.Inside it was an envelope. It contained a two-page handwritten letter dated 29 January 1903. It was written by James Robert Meech, the then lighthouse inspector of the Hobart Marine Board.

It mentioned about the replacement of the wooden staircase with a new iron spiral staircase, new concrete floor and the installation of a lantern room.It also recorded the changes in the order of the light’s brightness. It also contained a list of the names of the keepers and staff involved in the project. According to PWS, the work cost the Marine Board £2,200, which is equivalent to about $474,000 Australian dollars today.

Anita Waghorn, PWS manager for historical heritage, said the condition of the message was remarkable. The letter gives us an insight into the work that went into the lighthouse and the people who did it. This information adds to the rich history of Bruny Island and Cape Bruny Lighthouse.
